Plain English tightens ai writing. Paste prose and it flags each weak sentence with a fix and hands back a cleaned version.

The problem is old. In 1946 George Orwell wrote Politics and the English Language against prose that hides meaning: passive voice, abstract nouns, Latin where a plain word would do, metaphors dead from overuse. In 1948 Sir Ernest Gowers wrote Plain Words for the British civil service and turned the same instinct into working rules. Between them they solved most of it. Language models then added a dialect of their own: em-dashes everywhere, words like delve and leverage, preamble, summary closers, lists padded to three, stacked hedges, "studies show" with no study. So the skill runs two passes, Orwell and Gowers first, then the model habits. Your meaning and voice stay.

The plugin also includes Simple English, a separate skill for technical documentation. It follows ASD-STE100, the controlled language aerospace has written maintenance manuals in since 1986. Documentation goes there; prose with a voice goes to Plain English. The two never run on the same text..

Example prompts

  • “Rewrite this in plain English without changing its meaning.”
  • “Audit this prose for bloat and common AI-writing tics.”
  • “Rewrite these technical instructions in Simplified Technical English.”

Skills

  • plain-english

Tighten prose by stripping AI tics and applying Orwell/Gowers plain-English rules. Use when the user asks to rewrite, tighten, simplify, or detox writing — phrases like "plain English", "make this clearer", "cut the AI voice", "fix the writing", "rewrite plainly", "tighten this", "detox this". Also run as a self-audit pass before delivering long-form prose (essays, blog posts, articles, reports) so the output isn't recognisably AI-generated. Three modes: audit (flag + suggest), rewrite (deliver cleaned prose), edit (fix a named file in place). Technical documentation routes to the simple-english skill instead.

  • simple-english

Write or rewrite technical text with the rules of ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English so it is clear, unambiguous, and free of AI slop. Use for documentation, READMEs, runbooks, procedures, error messages, release notes, incident reports, and API guides. Also use when the user says "STE", "Simplified Technical English", "ASD-STE100", "de-slop", "make this readable", "write for non-native readers", or asks for docs that translate well. Enforces the standard's 53 rules: 20/25-word sentence limits, one word one meaning, simple tenses, active voice, condition before command.
